ST GEORGE’S DAY

WEEKEND CELEBRATIONS – 26-27 APRIL 2008

 

Newington Parish Council is delighted to announce the programme of events for their celebration of St George’s Day.  The festivities are planned for the weekend of Saturday 26 April 2008 and Sunday 27 April 2008 and will encompass all parts of the local community.

The weekend will start with a ramble leaving from Newington CEP School at 10am and arriving back from 12noon when a Ploughman’s Lunch will be provided by the Newington WI (call 01795 842711 for details). 

At 2pm on Saturday 26 April the Mayor of Swale will open the Grand Fete at Newington CEP School, School Lane, where there will be many stalls and stands with lots of traditional activities such as Medieval Stocks and Tin Pan Alley.  There will be demonstrations from Sittingbourne Boys Brigade Marching Band, Westlands School Band, Medway Baton Twirlers and the Junior Tygers Taekwondo group.  All parts of the village will be taking part including the School, Newington Scouts, Community Groups, Playgroups, the local Mother and Toddler Group and the Church.  Refreshments will be available in the hall or at the BBQ.  There will also be a “Super 7” sports contest for all ages to participate.  If any local groups would like to hire a stall please contact Jayne Venables on 01795 842044.  This will be the biggest event of its kind to take place in Newington in many years.

During the evening their will be a Folk Concert in the school hall from 7.30pm with a performance by the group “Pig’s Ear” who have been established for over 20 years and play all over the South East, including Rochester Sweep’s Festival.  Tickets are £5 per person or £10 for a family of 2 adult and 2 children.  For tickets and information please contact Jayne Venables on 01795 842044.

Activities on Sunday 27 April will start with a Church Service at 11.00am,  starting with the blessing of the orchards and followed by a Ploughman’s Lunch at the Church. 

The celebrations will finish on Sunday in a sports competition at the Pavilion and Recreation Ground in Orchard Drive in Newington.  There will be a Newington ~v~ Upchurch Football match and the final of the darts competition.  Refreshments will be available and there will be lots of fun for all ages.  For any information on the sports day please contact Vince Day on 07903 137306.
